Cannabis may be not on the top of the list of things that make you skinny. Although, according to a 2013 study, marijuana consumers are skinnier than people who never used weed. At the same time, everyone knows about those terribly strong munchies caused by marijuana that may make you eat almost anything at your reach. So, does weed make you skinny or, on the contrary, does it make you gain more pounds? Can you really lose weight simply by choosing the right strain or changing the way of marijuana consumption? We at WeedInFocus will try to help you figure this out.
There are at least two ways cannabis may help you control your weight: by suppressing your appetite and by reducing your blood sugar.
As you probably know, cannabis contains lots of unique chemical compounds. THC and CBD are the most famous but not the only ones that affect your body. The tricky thing is to find the right strain.
If your main goal is to get high, you pick a strain with a high THC content. Will weed make you lose weight in this case? Probably no, because THC is responsible for boosting your appetite, and not suppressing it. So, when you consume cannabis with lots of THC in it, you will most likely have to deal with the munchies. And eating too much can never lead you to a thin waistline.
However, a study conducted in 2012 shows that different cannabinoids have different effects on appetite. In contrast to THC or CBN, which is a breakdown product of THC, CBD does not make you feel hungry. It makes you eat less.
The second way marijuana may make you lose weight is by lowering your blood sugar levels. In some cases, a high level of blood sugar can make us feel hungry and eat uncontrollably. It is also what may lead us to developing such dangerous conditions as type II diabetes.
How can cannabis help in this case? A 2013 study shows that marijuana users have better blood sugar control than non-users. Plus, some of the cannabinoids contained in marijuana may improve insulin sensitivity.
So, it seems like weed can make you lose weight or, at least, control your appetite, but only if you choose the right strain. But what about the way of consumption? Does it make any difference if you vape weed instead of smoking it or consume cannabis-infused foods?
As we know already, smoking weed makes you lose weight if you pick the right strain. But smoking is only one of the possible ways of marijuana consumption. So, does the way you consume weed really affect your weight? Unfortunately, there is no concrete scientific data on this. What we do know, however, is that vaping and dabbing seems to be less harmful to your health, particularly your lungs, than smoking.
As for marijuana-infused edibles, the situation is a bit more complicated. In contrast to a joint or an e-cigarette, a cookie with cannabis in it is still a cookie. The good news is, today there are dozens of different kinds of weed edibles: from sugary sweets to sauces to drinks. Plus, some of the brands offer dietary and/or sugar-free products.
And remember, even though smoking, vaping, or eating cannabis may help you become a bit skinnier, weed will never make you lose weight if you do not change your lifestyle. So, eat healthy foods, stay active, and consume weed responsibly.
